Sun Safety
The sun is a great source of Vitamin D, which helps our bodies absorb calcium for strong, healthy bones. But too much sun without protection can lead to sunburn, skin and eye damage, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Protect yourself and your kids with these simple tips:
-
Cover up: Choose clothing that blocks UV rays. You can test by holding fabric up to the light—if you can see through it, UV rays can get through too.
-
Use sunscreen: Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it 15–30 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2 hours—or more often if swimming or sweating.
-
Don’t forget sunglasses: Choose kid-friendly sunglasses that block UV rays to protect their eyes.
Heat Safety
High heat and humidity can lead to heat-related illnesses, especially in young children. Even healthy, active kids can overheat during physical activity on hot days.
Keep your family cool and safe:
-
Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a minute.
-
Dress children in loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing
-
Plan outdoor activities for early morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler
-
Cool off with showers or baths when needed.
-
Watch for signs of heat-related illness and seek medical help if symptoms appear.
Tick Safety
Ticks are most active during warm months and can carry diseases like Lyme disease. Prevention is the best protection. Here are some simple ways to reduce the risk of tick bites:
-
Avoid wooded, bushy, or grassy areas with lots of leaves.
-
Wear long sleeves, pants, and high socks. Tuck pants into socks and shirts into pants to keep ticks off your skin.
-
Use insect repellents with 20–30% DEET on exposed skin and clothing. Don’t apply under clothes.
-
Treat clothing with permethrin, which kills ticks on contact and lasts through several washes (never apply permethrin directly to skin).
-
Always check for ticks after coming indoors. Use a mirror to check hidden areas like armpits, behind the ears, and the groin.
-
Toss clothes in the dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill any ticks that may have come inside.
-
Shower soon after being outdoors to help wash off ticks before they bite.
Staying safe doesn’t mean staying inside—just take a few precautions so everyone can enjoy the season in good health!
