It has come to our attention that there is a new TikTok Challenge that has already been carried out within our learning community. This afternoon, members of MHS staff reported an incident of Chromebook damage to administration. Through conversations with students, it became apparent that the incident was part of a wider “trend” on social media called the “Chromebook TikTok Challenge” which is encouraging students to shove commonplace metal objects into the USB port of their school-issued Chromebook. The goal is to create sparks, smoke, and even fire. As detailed in the resource below, this trend has already caused concerns for students' safety in school districts across the country.
We are asking for your support in engaging your children in conversations about this dangerous trend and its potential impact. This senseless destruction of technology is not only dangerous, it is wasteful, and a violation of MTSD policies. School teams will be working with students and their families if these incidents occur, following the procedures set out in our handbooks concerning destruction of property and the responsible use of technology.
Any discussions you are able to facilitate with your student(s) will only help to support and reinforce the expectations already in place in our schools. We appreciate your partnership and support in keeping our students safe. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s school principal if you have any questions.
