Wild Wings a very small group but that's okay she's amazing so I'm I'm people might drop in throughout the the presentation but I thought you know we would get started on time I'm a big stickler for that so I'm Dory Meyer I am at the school nurse in open at the high school and I also and the district lead nurse and I'm here with hello my name is Joey Lombardo miss schools news since Abuse Prevention specialist so I'm working with a lot of the kids around vaping and the big thing that we're focusing on right now so I'll be doing the presentation so thank you for being here we are recording this time just because we'd like to put it on our website after to make sure you know it's accessible I know a lot of people might not be able to attend this meeting so like I said we are recording it and it will be on the website so so I guess we're going to start so hopefully by the end of this presentation you should be able to discuss addiction and teens and how it impacts the brain talk about vaping and how text students understand what we're doing here to manage maybe and identify ways you can help so we're going to the National Institute drug abuse addiction is defined as a chronic relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences the key to addiction though is that it changes the way your brain is is wired and so even though people are choosing the bad behavior it's something that their brain has been trained to do because they're addicted so it's not as simple as just saying. Doing the bad behaved the brain is now programmed to do that over and over again so why are teens more susceptible to addiction there are a lot of misconceptions about the risk of vaping jeans are fully aware of the risks and the effects of nicotine has on their body and a lot of them don't even realize that they're actually consuming nicotine in the beginning when they start vaping and before they know it they're actually addicted to the nicotine without ever realizing that they were consuming it their brains are still developing so their prefrontal cortex that is responsible for all those big decision making skills believe they developed on so they don't really have the executive functioning skills to be go to tap into that rationalize. And make those decisions and the factual easily accessible information isn't really readily available there's a lot of different types of information out there from a lot of different resources and it can be hard to decipher what the truth is about vaping and the risk of vaping and nicotine addiction so you learn some things in school and you may read some things on the internet and hear something from your friends the student to weave through that and figure out what the truth is about vaping so one of the things that addiction plays a role in is is when I talked a little bit about our brain functioning as we have all of these neurotransmitters that we are that we release when things happen that we're either happy about or there's motive there's all these different neurotransmitters and dopamine is a big one so it helps regulate our movement or emotion or cognition or motivation or feelings of present pleasure in our brains are wired to make sure that we continue to do this and we have this pleasure and reward system that when we do something that is good for our bodies that's a life-sustaining or that we would perceive as good for our bodies it's going to keep wanting to do that our brain is wired the brain 10 said it's important and then it's remembered and it teaches us to do it again and again and again the thing about drugs or the impacts that it has is that drugs can release 2 to 10 times the amount of dopamine that Natural Rewards do like when I you know go and I have a checklist and I checked something off checklist and I feel really good dopamine gets released I'm going blue ye that felt really great I'm happy but when I'm when I do a drug or something that has like nicotine and it releases 10 * 22 1 times more of that dopamine so I'm like wow that's a really great I'm going to continue to do that and that's where they start hearing that stuff of chasing the high or crying to create that vicious cycle I kind like to think of it as a loud music and kind of the volume button on our stereos so we have this sliding of dopamine our brain goes whoa let's produce less of we need naturally and because we've got this overflow so it read the drug impacts of reward sir Starry Dobermans impact on the reward circle of the drug of you give me, I'm normally low because our brain has now been condition that it's going to receive two to ten times the amount that it's supposed to so we don't need to produce it by ourselves anymore so this is why when the user isn't using they kind of feel slats I just don't feel good or I need to do more because my brain isn't naturally producing that dopamine anymore it's turned down the volume what's a what is vaping until beeping is a term introduced by the electronic smoking device industry to refer to any electronic vaporizer are often called e-cigs Vapes vape pens vaporizer you cuz I know a lot of young people are calling them by their brand name so you may heard names like Jewel or a loon puff bar and so that term can actually incorrectly lead people to believe that using these electronic vaporizers produce a harmless water vapor which is not true quite the opposite they're actually producing potentially harmful are cells that are inhaled into the lungs and then exhaled into the environment and on the right here we have a lovely diagram of how an e-cigarette work so you have the light at the bottom that lights up on the smoker like cuts on it and inhales there's a battery that powers the device which then trigger is a heating coil which will then heat up the liquid or the e-juice that contains the nicotine and then that turns into the aerosol which is been in  through the mouthpiece so what is innovate and that's really great question because we don't really know are not FDA-approved there no set FDA standards so companies aren't really required to disclose the ingredients of what they're actually putting in these but they use they're putting into their bodies but some tests have been done so we know that it's not just harmless water vapor they contain a lot of chemicals including diacetyl which is a chemical linked to Serious lung disease there are volatile organic compounds that is Benzene which is found in car exhaust their heavy metal such as nickel and tin and lead and they come in many forms and can look like everyday products some pens USB USB flash drives and watches are good makeup there usually just like little cylindrical colorful you don't even realize what they are the one thing that vaping has that a lot of our students that are addicted the compound called nicotine so this is in addition to an addition to that kind of dopamine response that our brain has nicotine kind of shaped like this neuro transmitter or brain called the sea and it includes it really helps us manage our muscle movement breathing and heart rate learning and memory and when nicotine gets into the brain and attaches to these receptors and mimics the action of acetylcholine just like don't mean the brain is flooded with nicotine it produces less acetylcholine naturally and impacts our heart rate and have started learning our muscle movement or memory so it's just another thing that this data Vape Pro has an effect on our brains so what's interesting is a lot of them say a vape is nicotine free and this isn't necessarily true you know they might state that they actually may contain nicotine and the nicotine content that are in Vapes are berries from a low amount to a really high about most of what we see user using in our high school is one that have a high percentage of nicotine and that's about 40 mg and it's equivalent one of their pods is equivalent to one and a half to two packs of cigarettes and one really wild is nicotine reaches the brain in as little as 10 seconds so you would heal it and boom you're right there and you're immediately feeling the effects and again so your training your brain in so many different ways not to I have Natural Rewards and that you need to do it more so what are the health consequences of vaping so the US Surgeon General mom has stated that E-cigarettes are not safe in 2018 they actually declared use vaping as a public health epidemic and Lindsay cigarettes contain harmful ingredients including formaldehyde and acting lean which is used to kill weeds you can cause irreversible lung damage and heart disease they include problems I saw and vegetable glycerin which are toxic to cells and typically the more ingredients in an e-liquid greater the toxicity and the Sarah saw that is produced by the baby actually be filled with ultrafine particles which then into your body and can stick to your lungs when you inhale them there also connected with gentle effect associated which higher levels of ADHD symptoms and I can also cause the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal when they don't have the nicotine or have their Vape with them can affect mental health some of those symptoms include irritability restlessness was sleeping and intense nicotine cravings so the FDA has found that no e-cigarette is safe or effective in helping people quit smoking and facts more than half of all I don't need cigarette users continue to use regular cigarettes once they have started vaping and I think that was pretty common misconception when baseball first came out is people were constantly saying like oh I mean Bape to help me quit and that was kind of really projected onto all of us that we thought it was like a step down way to quit cigarettes when in fact it was equal to it you know and then sometimes hire nicotine content than even what they were smoking so is second-hand Vape a thing I get this question a lot is people's concern of if they're around Bates and what does that mean themselves you know in 2016 the Surgeon General said yeah I mean there is such thing as a second-hand Vape there's alter for particles there slavery in that can cause Siri lung disease through secondhand admissions so the long and short of it is we all want to breathe clean air and anytime you add something to the air that isn't there that wasn't supposed to be there at has an effect I'm so having this Vapor that's been are solved into our air and breathing that in your exposing your lungs to all of that why do you need to know about this there's some really helpful graphs here so as of 2019 one in for high school students in Vermont used e-cigarettes and I can see if there was a survey taken in 2019 about the past 30 days use of products among youth in Vermont and you can see declined little bit in 2017 and then sharply increased in 2019 and this is the most recent data that we have, but we're excited to get new data for 2021 and it sent it stated that the numbers will increase significantly after the pandemic started so why are students doing this there a lot of different reasons fifty five percent say they started making because they were curious about them 31% said that they were used by a friend or family member and 22% said that there was an availability of flavors such as mint candy fruit entice them to start vaping because of that sweet flavor and their friends are doing it so it's really become a thing so why are public officials kind of at a loss right now how to help this and so I'm not going to open this up but I'd like you to kind of just think about the cigarette smoking and the difference it is when your were thinking about vape and some that just click through and kind of talked about them so with cigarette smoke there's a lot of things that we physically right when where when we smoke cigarettes go back so one people can see the smoke really really easily too high smell right like it really really smells when somebody smoking it sticks to their clothing when they smoke there's a lot of tar build up I'm so there's a lot of physical things that we can see when people are smoking that Vape doesn't really have so one it doesn't smell there's no tar build up a lot of times smokers would have tar build up around their fingers or their guitar build up around their buildings I'm so that chronic smoke and that you don't they didn't with me being they don't have that there's so many options so just like their cigarette brands and different brands of them with there's tons and tons of flavors there's actually over 15,000 of them and they're not like you know just Mint or chocolate it is Razzle Dazzle Berry or creme brulee or caramel macchiato the things that really are targeted to our are used up and are adolescents and teenagers is everywhere kids are constantly students even even adults they have media with them and they are getting bombarded with images of Vape whether it's embedded in their TV shows whether it's embedded in their video games that they're playing or the YouTube that they're watching it's everywhere and they're constantly getting that feed I said this is inconspicuous you know like you can use a vape a lot of people use it wherever they go and it's very easy to hide it and the fact that it doesn't really have that smoke smell that nobody really even knows that it's happening tobacco companies have a lot bigger budget than they even did when they had when when smoking really honest honest big Trend back in the the 80's and 90's based have spent they spent over 88 million dollars per year on Advertising for bait lots of money goes into it this is just it I wanted to show you part of the advertising schemes that they use so these are at our local stores and they're right when you walk in so you can see they're very colorful they're fun when Eva has like you know they have all these different flavors that you can get and so it just it's it looks really attractive at two kids and two students that they they see that and they have all these really cool this is really awesome I'm so and that's just locally I'm so I found this video that I thought was really really really cool that talked a little bit about how the pandemic impacted this a Zoe was saying we're anticipating our numbers are to go up and so I felt like this would be really helpful to show I'm going to play it sorry Nickelback or maybe I won't spoil it because volume on it right now so let me just give you a update of what it is it basically is that the number of advertisements for Vaping within our media so as dreaming had increased because of the pandemic there was a huge Push by tobacco companies to embed them into and streaming so if you think about some of the more popular more popular kind of shows that are targeted to our adolescence and our students you can go oh yeah there was a painting that and it was it was like a social experiment was a special experience during that they weren't you know it was everybody was doing and it was fun I will spend this video I will be attached so people can see it so I apologize that it so what are we doing right now in the Milton School District to combat vaping we have recently put in detectors in the bathrooms at the high school which alert staff when Vape smoke has been detected or working to address to lock thing is what we're calling it which is when multiple students will go to the bathroom together and they'll hang out are and they'll vape and it sort of becomes like a social Gathering Place and has actually become an issue for other students who are just trying to use the bathroom and they've now walk into this little bit uncomfortable and this is something that we seen play with your female students and so we're working on a new policy where every student who is flocking in the bathroom innovate detector goes off while receive some education and resources about the risks of vaping and some formation on smoking cessation we have Paul Walker's to encourage students to get back to class I'm so there really spending as much time in the classroom is possible to sort of need to be vaping in school and we have our Elsie and procedure on Tobacco and vape you switch we follow very diligently we have signage over the building which has some education and also some resources and how to get in contact with me who is taking the charge on meeting with students who vape we have are healthy teachers curriculum which is an online educational program focused on Tobacco and vape use that we offer a student's found by Stanford University and we use it as a suspension alternative we do a referral to students doctor after further evaluation and treatment options a lot of the times there. prescribed nicotine replacement therapy which is been helpful in assisting students in their Journey rather than given anti-tobacco you soon as I leaving stickers materials that they passed out all over school for educating students on The Vaping policy and the procedure so they know what to expect if they get caught vaping in school and we are collaborating with the Vermont Department of Health on the best practice to address weeping and we also received a grant last year to hire for the position of Substance Abuse Prevention counselor which is me to hello so you might be wondering what can you do as a family member or a guardian or a friend or anybody who's just concerned about you sleeping so I'd say one important thing you can do is stay informed and up-to-date on the harms of e-cigarette use sand prediksi know what to look out for on your the facts about vaping know what resources are available to help students quit and be able to help students understand the harms of e-cigarette use you can always out for signs it babe you so obviously if you see somebody vaping and blowing out smoke that's one thing but you can also look out for any vaping devices and their space or maybe that they have disposed of in the trash can and other signs of a Ben can be in irritability if they're experiencing nicotine withdrawals sweet smells in the air and explain sweet smells and explain cops or excessive nosebleeds that can happen actually due to dehydration in the nasal passages which can happen when somebody is blowing the big smoke out of their nose a lot another thing you can do is have an open conversation with your student about vaping I'm really just like on a judgement-free basis without any a Gilt think it's important to let them know that you care about them and that you're concerned about their health and you know you just want to have an open conversation with them and encourage their honesty and you can always connect with me I am happy to meet with students are on families who have any concerns about vaping provide some education smoking cessation tips or resources or anything that you might feel helpful and you can reconnect with your doctor like I said that prescribed prescribed nicotine replacement therapy to the student they can also just like assess the level of nicotine use and what would be most helpful for this dude and provide them with some education and conditions and then the last thing you can do is set an example Yourself by being the big tree in tobacco free but if you do use those products it's recommended that you keep those supplies too.
