The safety of students and staff is our number one priority. In today’s world, we need to prepare for the situations we hope will never happen. Learning from tragic incidents around the country, school safety experts recommend that we have a range of options if faced with an intruder. In the past, we were trained to go into a lockdown, where students and staff remain out of sight in locked classrooms. Giving options, such as evacuating areas of the school away from the intruder, allows students to move to safety.
School Resource Officer Scott Philbrook reviewed current thinking on responses to an intruder at a parent workshop on October 17 at Milton High School. We share the slides with the caution that the topic may be not suitable for children. If there is interest, we will offer another workshop for parents later in the school year. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Corporal Philbrook at 893-5450 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
