AdvisoryGroup

As a key partner in our shared mission, your perspective is crucial to the success of the Milton Town School District (MTSD). I am establishing the Superintendent Parent Advisory Group (SPAG) to deepen the collaboration between our schools, families, and community, ensuring that we continue to provide a high quality, safe and inclusive learning environment for every student.

Purpose and Mission The primary purpose of the SPAG is to provide perspective and direct input to district leadership on policies, programs, and services that affect students and their families. This group will serve as an advisory body, not a policy or decision-making one.

The mission of the SPAG is to effectively collaborate with and advise leadership in order to improve the educational, physical, and social-emotional well-being of all MTSD students. Through this work, we will:

  • Foster Communication: Serve as a trusted source of information and a bridge between the district and families. Promote transparent and respectful communication.

  • Strengthen Partnerships: Work together on shared goals and priorities that reflect the MTSD Mission, Vision and Core Belief and Values and benefit students.

  • Provide Input: Share feedback and insights on school processes, policies, and initiatives from a parent's perspective.

  • Improve Outcomes: Identify common needs and ways to enhance the effectiveness of our educational system.

Possible Areas of Focus: A Starting Point The agenda for the SPAG will be set collaboratively by the members. Some possible discussion topics include:

  • Providing Input on Technology Initiatives: As our world becomes more digital, the SPAG will offer input on how we integrate technology thoughtfully while prioritizing student safety and well-being. Discussion topics may include:

    • Our district's cell phone policy in light of the new Vermont law, which prohibits student cell phone use during the school day starting in the 2026-27 school year.

    • The ethical and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, balancing it with authentic human intelligence to expand knowledge and promote personalized learning.

    • Education on the impact of social media and the new law restricting its use for school communication.

  • Preparing for Vermont's Education Transformation: The Vermont Legislature's recent education transformation law - ACT 73, may lead to significant changes in our state's public education system. This group will be vital in discussing these changes and helping guide Milton families on how to maintain a strong connection to their schools and ensure their voices are heard in a potentially larger district context.

Group Composition and Participation The SPAG will be composed of two to three parents from each school within the district. To begin, we will meet monthly for 60-90 minutes during the school year. However, as the group forms and priorities are established, we may revise our meeting frequency, length and format to meet our needs. Participation in this group offers an opportunity to increase your awareness of district policies and services, improve communication, and help inform local programs and practices.

We are seeking parents who are passionate about public education and eager to contribute to our district's vision and ongoing growth. Your perspective is essential as we work together to ensure that every student receives the resources and educational opportunities they need to learn and thrive.
