welcome to Milton Elementary and Middle School what you are about to see is a summary of issues that were uncovered in our recent facilities evaluation conducted by 2x Colin my name is Kim fetherstonhaugh and I'm an associate and architect at truexcullins Architects and interior design in Burlington Vermont I'm here today to talk about some of the issues that are facing the community at the elementary middle school Milton Vermont it's not unlike many other schools that we've seen most schools in Vermont were built in the 50s and expanded through the sixties and then send it again in the 90s and then most of them haven't been worked on since then and this school is fit that bill to Atty. Reginald Construction in 1954 with subsequent editions in 69 and 70s 6 and 96 in terms of some issues related to safety the front entrance doesn't have a window for staff to see who's coming the staffs back is to the exterior of the building and it's kind of a dark spot that is easy to hide around it should be more open and that's a function not just of the building itself and where it is cited but also the space allotted inside for Lobby which is been carved up in the office is overtime in the library we've got some other issues you know the Elementary School portion of the library really just isn't big enough there are classes that are being held in the library and those kids don't have enough room to their work or allow the library to be used by anyone else while there's a class discussion the carpet is is old and tired and we recommend replacing carpet in schools with newer material the IT department has a space needs as well they really need proper it Hub rooms closets for servers and there's no place to plant for it so you have to steal from other spaces to make it work look at the middle school for instance we've got a middle school with the hallways and lots and lots of kids moving through but there's no acoustic ceilings and is always metal lockers and boy is it noisy up there there how many programming issues facing the school to largely because of size issues and and also because of the programming has changed significantly since the schools were built in and renovated kids today are getting their regular educational needs met and they're also receiving a lot of services in school to to support their education things like occupational therapy Physical Therapy Speech & Language pathology special education services and there is no place for those services to be delivered we find that as is true in many schools storage closets have been renovated into offices there may not be proper ventilation or lighting we find that people are sharing spaces that really should be confidential or private but because of the need to find a place for people to have a desk this Hunter put in situations that are not ideal and we also have a number of classrooms that have some partition walls that aren't meant to be opened up but they're very old and decrepit and they don't really work very well we do find that there is evidence of purse Houston humidity issues in the school both with ceiling tiles that are doing what we call pillowing that is their number of dehumidifiers that are being run throughout the school I am mitigate some of this you know all of that adds up to increased risk at this of the school in terms of moisture related problems like mold and mildew or slips and Falls also and uses a ton of energy it doesn't really need to be used the system should really be replaced with the central system that deals with humidity that would be the the proper way to do it back to infrastructure there are a number of bathrooms in the building which are original they're very from 40 to 50 to 60 years old at this point and some of those original bathrooms have not been updated since the building was built in 19 in the 1950s they have the old style urine glitter floor mounted or it's pretty common that we see this because it's very expensive to do the number of the classrooms in have bathrooms in them these are for little kids who need to be too rise when they use in the bathroom and this is pretty normal and grades you know pre-k through grade 2 maybe but most of these bathrooms are again they're from another era and they're very very small they're not accessible there are a lot storage mean both in the library and throughout the building we can see when you walk into an elementary classroom that there's just not enough storage for the of the classroom instructional AIDS sometimes there's a piece of casework lower cabinets with a counter but is totally insufficient and you can see that because there's stuff piled on shelves and on tables and everywhere everywhere there's a horizontal surface filled out kitchen there's some issues with moisture in the floor and we've got some ceiling are some floor tiles rather that are popping up and we also can see that there's just not enough room for all the people who need to work here work with 1100 kids being served you know that's a lot of lunches right now the school is running a lot of lunch periods throughout a big part of the day I think lunch starts in this building around 10:30 and ends after 1 and the kids are getting out 20 or 30 minutes for lunch we hope this video provides a picture of the needs of the Herrick facility we look forward to engaging the Milton Community as we plan next steps
