About Me

I obtained my teaching degree at Lakehead University, in my home town of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. I taught for three years in Canada before moving to the United States in 2002. I have lived many "other lives," as swim coach, wilderness guide, office manager and touring musician, but teaching has always been my first and true calling. I look forward to working with each of my students to bring out the best in us both.

When I'm not in the classroom, I enjoy gardening, cooking, bicycling, canoeing, camping, skiing, and hanging out with my wife Chris and our dog Sibley.

Math Program Overview

I'm very exctited about our new math program this year. Connected Math (CMP) is a rigorous and responsive program which is developmentally suited to middle school students. The Connected Math program:

  • Is organized around important mathematical ideas.
  • Develops deep understanding of important ideas.
  • Embeds ideas in carefully selected and sequenced problems, to develop a coherent, connected curriculum.
  • Makes rich connections across problems, investigations from grade to grade.
  • Provides ongoing practice and assessment for important concepts, related skills, and algorithms.
  • Supports inquiry instruction and learning with an instructional model based on findings from recent cognitive research.
  • Supports teacher learning of both content and pedagogical strategies with extensive teacher guides.
  • Meets the needs of all students to grow in their ability to reason effectively, using different representations.
