PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION – A Personal Statement All individuals are entitled to an education. Education must consist of creative and innovative learning opportunities that maximize the individual’s intellectual capacity, personal growth, and social development. Each person is a unique individual with different life experiences, prior knowledge, needs, interests, capabilities, and learning styles. For these reason, it is necessary that learning opportunities and assessments be as diverse as the individuals they serve. Pedagogy and curriculum requires learning strategies and assessments which focus on these variables and helps guide an individual in his or her own personal quest for knowledge. Discovery and acquisition of knowledge must be “authentic”. Authentic learning is the ability to uncover, analyze, critique, and apply new information. Authentic learning stimulates additional questioning and perseverance. Authentic learning creates “critical thinkers”, allowing individuals the capacity to make informed decisions and choices. Authentic learning promotes life-long learning at all levels. |
