CLASSROOM INVOLVEMENT AND RESPONSIBILITIES

TASKS

Any class is mostly what the students bring to in the way of work ethic, enthusiasm, and helpful involvement.  All the tasks are real world parts of jobs.  These tasks will help you learn in addition to helping others learn.

You will be assigned a task for two weeks at a time. 
Then you will move on to the next task.

Worth 10% of your marking period grade.

Quote for the day

 

 

 

Pick a relevant quote and have it on the board at the beginning of class. Know author.

Have a typed list of quotes at the end of the two weeks.

Note Taking

 

 

Take careful notes each class. Type them up that night.  Put them in the binder for those absent.

Keep the chart of task completions for the two weeks.

Review

 

 

At the beginning of class review important concepts and upcoming events and responsibilities.

Poem of the Week

Bring in a poem/song to share, explain.

Have a clean copy for everyone.

Annotate your own copy.

Teach us the poem

Try to have the poem relate to our unit.

Read it to the class and lead discussion.

Summarize

 

 

The last five minutes of class, stop the teacher and give a summary of main points.

Etymology

 

 

 

Use the Etymology book to teach 4 roots per week.

Give us an exercise or two each week on these 4 roots and give a quiz at the end of the two weeks.

Throw in an interesting etymology a few times a week.

Help with equipment, phone, hand-outs, book numbers….

Discussion Leaders

Prepare 4 questions [typed] and lead a polar discussion that relates to something we are studying.

For one question prepare some arguments/evidence for each side of the issue and take opposing sides.

Community Book Discussion

Stir up interest.

Tell us about author.

Read an interesting passage.

Handout some study guide questions.

Do some research about the topic, genre, history….

 

5 -10 mins.

Test Prep

[Tuesday]

 

 

 

 

Prepare a section of a sample test.

Connect to the curriculum if  possible.

Give the multiple choice excerpt then help explain the answers.

Or you could give one of the essay prompts and expect a plan or a 25 min essay.

Vocabulary

 

 

 

 

Use Vocabulary Power Plus for the New SAT.

 

Monday- introduce words

Tuesday- vocabulary practice

Wed-  drill and exercise on the unit
Thursday-second exercise on the unit

Friday-- first Friday optional oral quiz

  Second Friday written quiz – correct  it.

 

               [10 to 15 minutes a day]

 

 

 

If you are absent three or more days during a two week period, you can fulfill your “task” responsibility by one of the following assignments. This will be due in one week from last absence.

 

  1. Photocopy, read, and annotate an article [5 or more pages] from a current New Yorker. 
  2. Write an essay [3 to 5 pages]. Get topic from the teacher.
  3. Reread a portion of a classic and write a one page response.
