Summer Reading and Writing Requirements 2010:
You are required to read three books:
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
And one other Community Book Discussion book for the 2010-2011 school year: Please pick one that will be discussed in the high school library between September 2010 and March 2011. This list can be found on the MHS library page of the MHS website: www.mtsd-vt.org
Assessment #1: Due date: Monday, August 16th at 3pm. Plan ahead—this is BEFORE school starts.
- Write a 3-5 page (ACE-IT paragraph) paper focusing on the following statement:
"Our struggles reveal our strengths and our weaknesses."
- Ask yourself: How do the struggles of the characters in my summer reading go through reveal their strengths or their weaknesses?
“In the books _________, __________, and _____________, the characters’ struggles reveal their strengths and weaknesses.” (Insert titles of books in place of blanks
--itallicized) You can alter this thesis.
Requirements:
- You must use evidence from all three of the required summer reading books to support your essay.
- Citations are required, but they do not have to be quotes from the books—you can paraphrase and/ or refer to events in the books instead.
- Cite any quotations you do use using the MLA citation format:
Last name of author, page number: (Steinbeck 43).
- A bibliography is not required.
- This paper is your first test grade of the year. If you do not finish this reading/ writing, you have until the first three week progress report date to make it up, but only for a maximum 50% credit.
Technical details:
- Save on your computer as a Word '97--'03 type file (.doc) and then upload at the bottom of the globalclassrom.us screen by the due date.

Assessment #2: Due Saturday, August 14, 2010
- If you do not have one, create a shelfari.com account and add and review each of the assigned texts and the community book discussion book you read.
- Also, find me: Lynne M and join the group AP English Language 2010. Please add me as a friend so that I can send you messages, etc.
Assessment #3: This will happen the first few weeks of school.
- You will participate in a group discussion and/or personal interview regarding summer reading.
