INTRODUCTION

This is a photograph of the amazingly - preserved Philadelphia, an American gunboat from the Battle of Valcour Island. Just as the cold waters of Lake Champlain have preserved the Philadelphia's remains for us to study today, so have Champlain Valley people preserved and kept the history of our region's battles for future generations to appreciate and learn about.

This webquest will focus on the American Revolutionary War campaigns that occurred in the Lake Champlain Valley theater: the 1775 Benedict Arnold / Ethan Allen campaign; the 1776 invasion of Guy Carleton; and the 1777 campaign of General John Burgoyne, also from Canada.

As we look at the various links and other resources on this site, we will find a rich storehouse of American Revolutionary history and information that would the envy of many students in parts of our country where the war was not fought. We have taken the quote of an unknown Vermont farmer when, in 1777, he was where he was headed.

"Goin' agin Burgoyne", was all he said. Just as the man who said it - straight and to the point. If the Americans did not stop the British threat from the North, it would destroy them and make it impossible to have an American nation. The web quest looks at attempts in three different years to deal with British threats to come down from Canada and invade us through the easiest route - the Champlain Valley.
