Anne Cameron at Milton Town School District

Anne Cameron graduated with a double major in Special Ed/Elementary Ed from Trinity College in Burlington, VT. She also minored in Psychology while attending Trinity. Anne worked for 5 years as a Special Educator before switching to the regular Elementary Ed classroom, however, she found her Special Ed. skills invaluable for working with ALL children and all learning styles. Anne went on to earn her Master's Degree in the Multiple Intelligences from Trinity College in 1996. She has spent 26 years of her teaching career focusing on children's strengths in order that they may learn to "love" school and works from these strengths to help children invest in school and learn to develop their weaker areas. We all have things to learn whether it be reading, writing, math, science, social studies, the arts, making healthy choices or social skills and how to work productively in a classroom with other learners. Learning needs to strike a balance between being "fun and remaining challenging".....children intrinsically love to learn and when we bring our own "joy" to learning, it is contagious in the classroom....learning must be celebrated and individual students must feel valued for their talents and diversity.

Anne lives with her partner Michael (a social worker and theater director) in Williston and has two children Jenna (22) who lives out in San Diego and is pursuing her singer/songwriter dream, while practicing as a massage therapist. Her son Josh (18) will graduate from CVU this June and plans to attend Champlain College in the Fall....he is also interested in joining the Peace Corps after college. The whole family loves music, theater and travel. Everyone is involved in music on many levels both singing, playing piano and/or guitar and their involvement in Musical Theater in school, summer camps, Lyric Theatre and Stowe Theater Guild. Mrs. Cameron teaches private piano lessons and does musical theater camps for children every summer.

Anne's most recent adventure was traveling to Japan for 5 weeks last summer with her son. She spent 4 weeks in Kyoto with day trips to Osaka, Kobe and Miyajima Island and then spent 1 week in Hiroshima with a Japanese family who spoke very little English....it was truly the trip of a lifetime and she made some lifetime friends there. Anne brought her knowledge and love of Japan to her classroom this Fall and did an amazing unit of study on Japan which included learning about the culture, the language, the clothing, the festivals, the food, and even preparing a 3 course meal of Miso soup & Green Tea, Soba noodles with vegetables and egg, and vegetable sushi which we rolled ourselves! The children learned many Japanese words and spoke them during this meal (Macha Kudasai, Kampai, Tamago Kudasai, Itadakimasu! Domo Arigato....just to name a few.....we learned over 50 words over the 8 week study). The children have been fascinated with Maps, different cultures and other people from around the world ever since....there isn't a day that goes by that we don't have the Globe out or a conversation about another country. Bringing what you love to the classroom is what keeps it fresh and is inspiring to the children as well. I always loved being a student and consider myself a life-long learner.

I still LOVE teaching after 26 years and working with our youth is a responsibility that I take seriously. Besides the curriculum, we are here to help to develop these young citizens and future leaders....it is a privilege to work in the classroom and know that I can make a very positive impact on the children in my room. It brings me great joy to see someone "light up" with an aha moment after they have been grappling with new material or when they make a real-life connection on a deeper level while conferencing or writing a journal entry and you just know that this moment is life-changing for them....we have budding authors, artists, mathematicians, scientists, entrepreneurs and leaders in our rooms! I am very lucky to have had this opportunity to teach.
