Milton Elementary School’s program has been recognized by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education as a “STARS” school. In order to earn this national award, the PE program had to document attainment of 31 criteria set forth by NASPE. The overall goal of Physical Education is to give students the skills, knowledge, and desire to lead an active life both now and as adults. The program of study begins with basic locomotor, non-locomotor and manipulative skills and progresses to using these skills in modified team and individual activities. Through a series of grants, awards, and community partnerships, the PE program has been successful in adding lifetime activities including inline skating, snow shoeing and rock climbing to the curriculum. Accommodations are made in all activities to meet the needs of individual students. Students are assessed on skills, concepts, and strategies. Additionally, in grades 3 through 6, students take part in a nationally recognized, criterion referenced fitness test. Assessment results are shared with students and sent home to parents on a report card three times a year. |
