Welcome to Second Grade!
Welcome to Second Grade! Our names are Nicole Mester, Beth Maurer, Hillary Schmid, Lisa Reyell, and Diane Quinn. We are looking forward to working with your child next year.
Second Grade is an exciting year. Students become more independent learners and problem solvers. They work as members of our community. Your child’s class will become like a second family. S/he will learn to read, write, spell, develop a deeper understanding of place value, problem solving strategies, and learn how to add and subtract numbers within 1,000. S/he will also learn about maps, the community, states of matter, rocks and soil, and life cycles. It is sure to be a year full of exciting learning!
Summer is a fun time for children to play outside and enjoy family and friends, but it is important to avoid the “summer slide.” The following are some recommended ideas to keep your child’s skills sharp.
Read! Read! Read!
This is the most important thing you can do with your child over the summer! Check out the Milton Public Library for their summer programming, they have a lot of fun activities!
Raz Kids is another great way to keep your child reading over the summer. You can access Raz Kids on a computer or tablet. Your child should use their first grade login information.
Practice math facts with your child. This can be done with flash cards, sidewalk chalk, or XtraMath (xtramath.org). XtraMath is a website that children should access everyday for 10 minutes and will drill them on their basic addition and subtraction facts. Once they have mastered one operation, it will move the child on to another operation. Make math meaningful! Have your child count coins with you, tell time, and solve real world math problems (grocery store, road trips, etc.)
DreamBox is another great way to keep your child engaged in math over the summer. You can access DreamBox on a computer or tablet. Your child should use their first grade login information.
Have your child keep a journal of their summer activities! They can write daily or weekly. This will be a great way to remember the summer! Children like to look back and remember their wonderful summer!
