Math

This year I teach the fifth grade math curriculum only, so that is the work you will see posted in this section. We have been working on NECAP preparation since the start of school. This has involved reviewing rounding, estimating, multiplication and division, along with doing probability and logical thinking activities. After the NECAP testing is complete we will do a unit on understanding the meaning of division and multiplication and we will review subtraction and addition skills.

My math classes revolve around group work. I usually spend 5-10 minutes on a math warm-up that is done individually and then begin with a 15 minute lesson. After the lesson students begin working in their small groups on group-worthy tasks that revolve around the objective of the lesson. Groups change every two weeks or as I feel needed.

Game Day Friday's

Friday I run game stations. I have five to six stations set up around the room that the students rotate to. The stations reinforce math skills from the lessons that have been taught that week. Stations include computer games, logical thinking activities, card games, board games and interactive bulletin boards.

Literacy

This year I am teaching the sixth grade program and I am so excited about having the same group of students. Our first theme focus is Courage. We will be reading stories of courageous people and the events that allowed them to show courage in a time of uncertainty. Your child will be writing stories on courage and heroes, while reading wonderful novels from the list of books below. We are also really focusing on writers workshop. Your child will be keeping a writing notebook filled with stories, poems, words, and many more writing ideas. Some of these stories will become published pieces, others will be kept in their notebooks for them. My goal is to try to engage all students in writing and to make them relate writing to real-life, not to a procedure that they have to perform only in school.

Reading Homework -10/29/07

Your child will need to be reading every night for the month of October for 30 minutes and recording their time and books on their monthly book log.

 Spelling

For the first couple of weeks we will be conducting spelling inventories and completing activities so that we can assess your child's ability in the area of spelling. After this we will begin using our developmental spelling program, Rebecca Sitton. Please click on the site listed below to learn more about this program and feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Spelling Homework-10/29/07

Both 5th and 6th grade will have a spelling packet to complete and turn in on Friday. The expectation is that they work on one page per night to reinforce the skills, rather than completing the entire packet in one night.
