Assessment
Tammy Boone, Data Assessment Coordinator

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Tammy Boone and I am the Data and Assessment Coordinator for the Milton Town School District. I joined the Milton Town School District in 1993 working in various positions. In 2004-2005 I took my current position as the Data and Assessment Coordinator. In this role, I oversee the local, state and national assessments administered throughout the district.
I find the job to be very challenging and rewarding at the same time. As the world around us is changing, so is public education. Under the federal law “No Child Left Behind”, schools are expected to show proficiency for all students by 2013-2014. This is a challenge as not all students have the same life experiences. I work closely with teachers and administrators to define the assessments that will be used to inform classroom instruction and look at the larger picture on how are students are performing. This work is very rewarding when you see progress and our students being successful academically and socially.
I am married and live with my husband and 2 children in Milton. I am very proud of my school community. I find it an honor to work with the staff at the Milton Town School District. We are lucky to have an unbelievable group of caring individuals.
I am always available for questions regarding our assessment program. Please feel free to contact me at 802-893-3210 x1135.
Why is assessment important?
It is important to measure student achievement because it provides information about our programs, curriculum and instructional practices. It helps us determine areas of strengths and weaknesses in our educational system. It also helps us to monitor continuous improvement of student performance and use the data to review district progress.
How do we assess?
There are many different types of assessment in different areas of the curriculum, on different levels (local, state and national).
At our local level, there are different assessments used to measure student achievement.
Formative Assessments- A diagnostic assessment used to provide feedback to teachers and students over the course of instruction. Assessments become formative when the information is used to adapt instruction to meet student’s needs.
Summative Assessments - A assessment that generally takes place after a period of instruction and requires making a judgment about the learning that has occurred. (e.g., grading or scoring a test or paper).
Norm Reference Test - Compare student or group performance to other students’ or groups’ performance.
Standards Based Assessments - Compare student’s performance to academic standards. In Vermont, the Grade Level Expectations (GLE’s ) are the standards established for each grade level.
The Milton Town School District is currently working on developing a Local Comprehensive Assessment Program. We are evaluating all of the current assessments and aligning them to the Grade Level Expectations. This is a work in progress and will change as this work continues. Below is a list and brief description of the current assessments administered in the Milton Town School District.
