Make a big book nook on a little budget
Children get more excited about reading when they have their own books—and when their books are kept in a special place. Help your child create her own book nook by giving her a bookcase or her own shelf in a family case. Put pillows or a comfortable chair nearby. You can find inexpensive books at flea markets, garage sales and public libraries. Encourage your child to arrange the books as she chooses.

Bring out your child’s inner scientist
Children of all ages are natural scientists. Every time they ask “Why?” or wonder how things work, they’re asking a scientific question. Every day, find ways to help your kids learn science. For example, you might: See how long it takes for a dandelion to burst into bloom. Record the changes of the moon’s shape over a month’s time. Bake a cake together. Figure out how the spin cycle removes water from your clothes.
