WELCOME BACK LETTER

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back to Milton Elementary School and the 2007-2008 school year.  We hope everyone has had a restful summer vacation, and we are looking forward to beginning a new school year.  Kerry Sewell has accepted the Director of Curriculum and Instruction position,  and Wes McClellan has joined the elementary principal team this school year.  We look forward to our work together and with all of you.

As most of you are aware, we continue to be a school that has been identified through the No Child Left Behind Act as not meeting adequate yearly progress (AYP) goals in reading and math.  Over the past two years, we have been working to develop a stable and efficient system to support all students in achieving the defined high expectations in student learning.  This has included the adoption and implementation of the Houghton Mifflin core reading program, and the implementation of the Mathletics math intervention program.  Last year, we also began our collaboration project with the University of Vermont Bridging Project to further our professional development in the area of literacy instruction.  As we did last year, we will be contacting parents of students who are eligible for district funded supplemental services after school.  We will continue with these supports as we engage in our work and strive to raise the levels of student achievement for all.

After a competitive interview and selection process last spring, we have several new teachers joining us at Milton Elementary this school year.  They are:

Ashley Levine, Grade 1                                    Carrie Premsarger, PreK

Lauren Sibley, Grade 1                                    Lauren Talbot, K-2 Special Education

Amy Heinz, Grade 3                                                Debbie Chenin, 3-4 Special Education

Christian Mock, Grade 3                                    Ashley Clark, Speech and Language

Hilary Dana, Grade 5                                                Kate Brayton, K-2 Social Worker

Sarah Allen, Grade 6

We believe strongly that we need to work collaboratively and cooperatively to improve the school community.  It is through this shared responsibility that all students of MES will continue to grow and develop. We are cognizant that as your child's first and most important teacher you have the right and responsibility to actively participate in your child's education.  Please contact us should you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress or experiences at Milton Elementary. Please also take the time to review the information in this handbook with your student.  If you have any questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher’s supervising principal for clarification. In order for us to resolve issues and plan in a collaborative manner, concerns and recommendations need to be shared with us. Our office doors are always open.  We look forward to working with you in the best interest of your child's education.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Wood

ADVICE FOR PARENTS

(The following is an excerpt directed to parents from "A NATION AT RISK", a report by the National Commission on Excellence in Education. We believe that it is worth reprinting.)

You know that you cannot confidently launch your children into today's world unless they are of strong character, and well-educated in use of language, science, and mathematics.  They must possess a deep respect for intelligence, achievement, learning, and the skills needed to handle them; for setting goals; and for the disciplined work.  That respect must be accompanied by intolerance for the shoddy and second-rate masquerading as "good enough".

You have the right to demand for your children the best that our schools and colleges can provide.  Your vigilance and refusal to be satisfied with less than the best are the imperative first step.  But your right to a proper education for your children carries a double responsibility.  You must be a living example of what you expect your children to honor and emulate.

Moreover, you bear a responsibility to participate actively in your child's education.  Encourage more diligent study and discourage mediocrity and the attitude that says, "let it slide"; monitor your child's curiosity, creativity, and confidence; and be an active participant in the work of the schools.  Above all, exhibit a commitment to continued learning in your own life.

Finally, help your children understand that excellence in education cannot be achieved without intellectual and moral integrity coupled with hard work and commitment.  Children will look to their parents and teachers as models of such virtue
