The Presidential Physical Fitness Program

What is Physical Fitness?

Being physically fit means having the energy and strength to perform daily activities vigorously and alertly without getting "run down" and to have energy left over to enjoy leisure time activities or meet emergency demands.

How do you measure Physical Fitness?

Physical fitness can be broken down into three main parts: endurance, strength and flexibility. Each one can be measured and there are specific exercises to improve each area.

Above information taking from the President's Council on Physical fitness and Sports.

Students in my Physical Education class take part in the President's challenge Physical fitness test. This test requires student's to participate in the follow activities:

Curl Ups - This test measures how many curl ups a student can do in a minute.

Pull Ups - This test measures how many pull ups a student can do.

There is not time limit and the pull ups must be done with

Straight legs and chin must go above the bar.

Shuttle Run - This test measures how fast student's can run.

Two blocks are set up thirty feet away from the

Start line and students are to run as fast as they can to

Retrieve one block at a time. The students fastest time

Is recorded.

One-mile walk jog run - Walking is permitted. The students' goal is to

Complete the mile as fast as they can.

Sit Reach - A specially designed box is used for this flexibility test.

Students' sit down with bare feet up against box and

Reach forward three times and on the fourth try they

Hold their reach so that it can be recorded.

If students' score is at the level of the qualifying standards for all five areas they receive The Presidential Physical Fitness Award.

If students' score is at the level of the qualifying standards for four out of five they receive the national Physical Fitness Award.
