Introduction

Whose footsteps first walked this land? Were your anscestors the first ones here?

The land that we are now walking was first inhabited by the Native Americans. They were here long before the white man came. We have learned there are five main groups of Native Americans of North America. We have studied the Native Americans of the Woodlands,Plains, and Desert. We are about to begin our study of the Native Americans of the Northwest Coast and Arctic. One of the crucial events which occurred for the Southeastern Native Americans, specifically the Choctaw and Cherokee Nations, was the government forcing them off their land.

We need to become more familiar with those nations. To become more familiar with them, you and a small group of students will locate information about these two nations and the events leading up to their removal. Why were they forced off their land? Where did they have to go? Who forced them to leave? What was their life like once they moved and got settled again? What was the Trail of Tears?

Your goal is to visit internet sites and other resources to help you learn about the Choctaw and Cherokee Nations' culture and the Trail of Tears. By visiting these sites you will learn the answer to these questions and learn more about their way of life.
