During Medieval Times, designs called Coat of Arms were used on shields, flags and tapestries. When knights were wearing their armor, they couldn't see each other's faces. In order to tell their friends from their enemies, they used Coat of Arms. Each knight had his own design. So did every noble family. Most Coat of Arms were very simple designs.

You will be designing your own Coat of Arms. Look through the linked Internet site carefully. I have also given you a handout which will be very helpful. Follow these steps when you are making your drawing:

Decide how you want to divide the field. Dividing the field means using lines to create different spaces on your Coat of Arms. On the Internet site, look for the words Ordinaries and Partitioning the field.

Decide what type of lines you will use to divide the field. Straight lines will work best and were used most often. My advice is to use straight lines.

Pick colors for each section of your design. Remember, you may only choose from the colors shown on the Internet site.

You may add a charge (picture) if you would like to. You may only use one charge. Look for the words, Common charges, to find pictures. You can also trace the charges from the worksheets.
