 DEFINING A HURRICANE

1) Look at the points of ORIGIN for Atlantic Hurricanes for the past century. Write a statement about their locations.

 

2) List the Hurricane Season dates for the ATLANTIC OCEAN and the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

 

3) Take a VIDEO TOUR through a hurricane and read "Understanding Hurricanes".

 

All hurricanes create storm surges. A STORM SURGE is a sudden rise in the water level of the ocean. Note the graphic below. STORM SURGE & RIP TIDE can create extremely hazardous coastal conditions.

 

4) Visit the LEARNING page and read the introduction about hurricanes. Answer all questions [A-F] in the "GET INFO" section. Remember, place a copy of your answers in a Hurricane Portfolio.

5) Explain the difference between tropical depression, tropical storm, and a hurricane.

 

6) Complete the "CHALLENGE ACTIVITY" for hurricane formation. Create a hurricane illustration. This video illustrates how WIND SHEAR can play a role in hurricane formation.

7) List four hurricane myths and explain the reality in each case.

 

8) Look at the MYTHOLOGY AND FOLKLORE site. Write a myth of your own about hurricanes. Illustrate and dramatize for your class.
