Introduction

Welcome to the Dance-Quest where you will discover different types of dances from around the world. People have danced throughout time for numerous reasons as a form of celebration. Whether it was for the changing of season's, the harvest, celebrating gods, or just a way to have fun within a community, dance has been a part of people's lives for a long time. Dance allows people to express how they feel using their whole body, instead of just their voice. The dances you will research have been around for hundreds of years and many have never changed. I hope you enjoy learning about this aspect of people's culture.

Tasks

Your class is taking part in a school-wide celebration of the culture's around the world to get ready for the Olympics. The principal just left your class after telling you that you will be in charge of discovering dances from countries that will be sending athletes to participate in the Winter Games. Your first job will be to research multicultural dances to record basic information on two different styles. Once each person has completed their reports, you will form groups of four with others who have studied similar dances. The four of you will choose a dance to teach the rest of your classmates and peers within the school environment. As part of your presentation, you will need to give an oral summary on the background of your dance, as well as teaching the dance. Good luck and have fun!!!

Work cooperatively to choose a dance and to decide how you are going to teach the dance. Make sure you all are familiar with the dance's background information, rhythm or beat, different sections, and movements. Each of you should take charge of one of the following jobs below:

Learning Advice

When completing your dance fact sheets:

1. If there is not enough information to fully complete the fact sheet on the website that you are working with, check out another site from the resource section. Many of the types of dances can be found on more than one web site.

2. Check out at least three websites to complete your fact sheets. If you cannot find the information needed to finish your project on the web, check with the teacher on where to get the answers to finish the questions.

When planning the dance presentation to your peers:

1. Make sure your dance is simple enough for students to learn in one class.

2. Check with your teacher to see if they have an explanation of the dance you choose and appropriate music to teach the dance.

3. Think about how you are going to group your classmates when teaching the dance.

4. Meet with the teacher and talk them through your presentation. Listen to any feedback they give.

5. Make any changes you need.

6. Practice the presentation from start to finish.

Conclusion

Now that you have discovered that dance has been a major part of people's live around the world, I hope you keep your eyes open for it in your daily lives. Today's performers combine singing and dance to make their performances more exciting. When you are watching MTV and Britney Spears or N' Sync are singing, do you see any dance moves similar to what you have done in class? Also, look at the dancer's moves and see if you can figure out what they are trying to communicate with their bodies.

Also, compare the dance's of today with those from the past. Are there any similarities? What are the differences? Have you seen any dances on t.v. that are similar to or the same as the types you investigated for this web quest? Do you know anybody who takes dance lessons?
