Example Performance Assessment Tasks

These Example Performance Assessment Tasks are embedded with content. They are intended to be examples and may need refinement depending on how they will be used.

The Example Performance Assessment Tasks were developed by Vermont teachers to support the assessment of the Technology Grade Expectations. They have been embedded with content based on the Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities as defined in the various content Grade Expectations.  There are examples from across the disciplines in a variety of grade levels.

These Tasks are intended to be examples and, although it is possible to use them as is, or modify and use them, that is not the main intent. The purpose of these examples is to stimulate the creative thinking in others in order that they may create their own performance assessment tasks. By providing these examples, it is our hope that many other Vermont educators will gain a better understanding of how they may assess their students’ content and technology skills and knowledge through performance assessment tasks.

Although the Example Tasks follow a standard format, teachers were given wide latitude in their development.  Each one is unique and therein lies their strength. We ask the reader to understand that these are not, nor were they intended to be, units of study.  They purposefully lack that level of detail.  They are the assessment of some (or all) of the Grade Expectations that have been studied in a particular lesson or unit.  At times, you will notice that the task is carried out during one class period at the end of the unit. More often, because they require students to carry out an often complex performance and/or develop a product, they require several class periods.

Since they are summative assessments, in most cases teachers will be trying to ascertain if individual students have attained the skills and knowledge being assessed. Although it may be possible to accomplish this while students are working collaboratively, more often students will be working independently to demonstrate their capabilities.
