1.                 Setting the Context

The study of Native American cultures is a six-week unit covering the cultures from four different geographical regions of the United States.  Students use a variety of different resources (fiction and non-fiction) to study the people of these regions.  One of the areas studied is natural resources and how the Native Americans used these resources to meet their basic needs.

2. Grade Expectations

IT1 – Launching a program from the desktop

IT4 – Creating a slide presentation including title slide, graphics, text, voice, sound related to topic and documentation of sources.

IT5 –

  • Using multiple resources including:
    • Library catalog
    • Electronic resources
    • Internet web pages
  • Navigating to various websites by typing a URL into a browser or using a list of links identified by the teacher.
  • Navigating using forward, back, home, and refresh.
  • Using hyperlinks to navigate the world wide web.

H&SS3-4:12

Students show understanding of human interactions with the environment over time by describing how patterns of human activities (for example: housing, transportation, food consumption or employment) relate to natural resource distribution (eg. How population concentrations in Vermont developed around fertile lowlands, French/English/Indian conflict for furs in Northern Vermont.

H&SS3-4:5 Students develop reasonable explanations that support the research statement by…

  • Organizing and displaying information in a manner appropriate to the research statement through tables, graphs, maps, dioramas, charts, narratives, and/or posters
  • Classifying information and justifying groupings based upon observations, prior knowledge, and/or research
  • Using appropriate methods for interpreting information such as comparing and contrasting.

3. The Performance Task

Students will research Native American cultures and then analyze the information they collect to compare and contrast two different populations.

Goal(s): Students will create a multimedia presentation comparing and contrasting two different Native American populations. Students will focus their attention on the types of natural resources available and how they used them to meet their basic needs (food, shelter, and clothing).

Role: Researcher and analyst

Audience: Instructor and peers

Situation: The students have just won a contest and will be starring in a documentary on Native American cultures. They will be portraying Native Americans from two different regions, the Northeast Woodlands and the Plains.  They will need to start researching for their roles.  Since they don’t know which culture they will be assigned to, they must learn about both.  They will be comparing and contrasting each region and asked to put themselves into the role of one of the First Americans who lived in these regions early in our history.

Product/Performance: Multimedia Presentation

4. Activities

Activity #1: Students will access the computer and launch a web browser.  Students will visit the predetermined sites provided by the instructor.  Using the the table below, students will enter information about the Eastern Woodlands and Plains Native American cultures to use for making comparisons.

Activity #2: Students will be given the storyboard handout below.  Teacher will discuss the importance of planning the multimedia presentation.  The teacher can model the process.

 Student’s Storyboard Planner

Over the course of the next week, we will be working on making a multimedia presentation using
Power Point.  In order for you to start this process, this planning sheet must be finished and turned in by

Activity #3

Students will receive the requirements for their multimedia presentation. (The handout is found below.)  They will be given the time (45-60 minutes)  to use their storyboard planner to develop their presentation.

5. Materials and Resources

List the resources or materials that are needed in order to complete this task. Include how students will use technology to enhance their learning (i.e., uses a digital camera, emails an expert, uses the Internet to locate and validate information, uses instructional software, uses graphic organizer software, etc.).

Computer with Internet access and library of books on the different Native American cultures
Multimedia presentation software
Graphic organizer and assignment sheets for each student
