1.
Setting the context
These activities are
part of a large third grade Social Studies Unit On Japan. They will take place
over a month long study. Student study
the various aspects of the Japanese Culture past and present. Students learn about Japanese food, clothing,
sports, religion, festivals, traditions, history, calligraphy, geography, and
language and how they have changed over time.
Hands on activities include preparing and cooking Japanese foods,
building kites to celebrate Children’s Day, designing and painting kimonos,
reading numerous Japanese folktales and writing Japanese storyboards, creating
a 3-dimensional project on Japanese Cultural Topic. The class multi-media
presentation is a culminating project presented at the Japanese Feast to parents,
principal, superintendent, and special invited guests.

3. The Performance Task
Student will show
through use of a multi-media presentation the importance of a specific aspect
of Japan’s culture with guidelines outlined by the classroom teacher that
include a definition or explanation, example, history, picture and interesting
facts.
GOAL: Develop a multi-media
presentation
ROLE:
Expert on specific topic of Japanese Culture.
AUDIENCE:
Parents, Principal, Superintendent at
culminating Japanese Feast Celebration
SITUATION: Your class has been asked to do a presentation at The Japanese Feast
Celebration demonstrating the role and impact that their specific topic had on
Japanese Culture.
PRODUCT: Presentation of Research Project

Activities
These activities are part
of a large third grade Social Studies Unit On Japan. They will take place over
a month long study. Students will be
investigating indepth one aspect of Japanese Culture. Other projects will be going on during this
time period. The multi-media presentation
is the culminating project.
Teacher introduces aspects of Japanese Culture through examples of articles, books, topics, reports, pictures, and video. Student chooses specific topic about Japanese Culture from a teacher prepared list.
1. Teacher provides a
formatted inquiry outline sheet to help students organize data collected on
their topic. Students research information on Japanese Culture on Internet.
Students will launch program, navigate to various websites, use forward, back,
home, and refresh and use hyperlinks to navigate the world wide web. After
finding 3 relevant sources of information on the Internet they will bookmark
and select the interesting information about their topic. Students will copy
and paste the selected relevant data to their file and save to their folder.
Students will demonstrate copyright and fair use guidelines included in their
footnotes and Bibliography.
2. Students will access specialized
CDs and digital encyclopedias to collect further data.
3. Using these inquiry sheets provided by
the teacher, students will gather information referring
to and following this plan and prepare text for multimedia presentation. Students will locate for evidence including
text, pictures, and excerpts from primary sources and save all data in teacher
designated project folder.
4. Students will locate and add scanned or digital pictures, sound,
video, and Title page to their presentation. Students will use their inquiry
sheet and digital media to create a visual
organizer to organize their multi-media
presentation.
5. Students will prepare a
multi-media presentation including title slide, graphics, sound/voice, text,
scanned or digital photo, bibliography and table of contents.
6. Students will present
presentation to invited guests at the Japanese Feast Celebration.
