3. The Performance
Task
Students will write a
procedure for 1st Graders on logging on and logging off a computer
on the school network.
Goal(s):
Find, open, and use a word processor to write the procedure listing the steps in a logical order.
Role:
The students are preparing
to be technology experts to the younger students using their written sequence
of steps to introduce first graders to the task of logging on and off the
school network. The second grade student will be a mentor to the first grade
student.
Audience:
First graders who will be
learning how to log on and off of the school network.
Situation:
The first graders are seeking technology experts to show
them the steps needed to successfully log on and off the school network. The second graders have been asked if they
could become the experts and show the first graders the steps needed to log on
and off the network. The preparation and sharing will occur in the library media
center.
Product/Performance:
A word processed set of
steps printed on a sheet of paper.
4. Activities
Step 1
Students will write with pencil and paper a draft of the steps needed to log on and off the network. They can do it from memory if they can or they can sit at a computer and write the steps as they perform them.
Step 2
Teacher reviews the draft and gives feedback to the student until the teacher determines the student is ready to go to the computer.
Step 3
Student uses the computer to:
· log on to the network
· launch the word processing program
· create a new document
· type and edit their steps using the keyboard selecting proper letters, numbers and punctuation
· use the pointing device (mouse, track pad, etc) to navigate around the document
· cut and paste text within the document
· save their work after each session and be able to reopen for subsequent sessions.
Step 4
Teacher reviews word processed document on the computer. When the teacher is satisfied that appropriate revisions have occurred then the teacher will ask the student to print the document.
Step 5
After the document has been printed, the student should scramble the steps using cut and paste and save the document with a new name.
Step 6
Students swap documents by either swapping computers or sharing the document and use cut and paste to put the other students steps back in order.
Step 7
Students bring their printed procedures to use to help their 1st grade buddy learn the steps for logging on and off the network.
5. Materials and Resources
Paper, pencil, network computers and printer, first grade buddy to mentor.
