RE: Use of personal laptops & other Digital Devices on Campus
DATE: October 1, 2008
Due to increasing requests to allow use of personal computers on site, the Technology Department has developed a Procedure so that this can occur and at the same time protect the network. This procedure is attached. Basically, we need to “check-in” your laptop, make certain it has up-to-date virus protection, doesn’t have file sharing software that could bog down our network, and record some basic information about the computer/device. This information would allow us to track any issues your personal computer could be potentially causing on the network.
In order to do this we are setting up a schedule for the next three weeks starting on October 6th at the Middle/High School. “Check-ins will occur in the library. The schedule is also attached to this memo. If you need to “check in” your laptop after October 24th, please e-mail itdept@mtsd-vt.org
In the elementary school, faculty and students should email itdept@mtsd-vt.org
to set up an appointment.
At these meetings we will give out instructions on how to connect to the Internet, how to access your personal H Drive, and how to connect to printing services.
We understand that some of you are already using your personal laptop, and may have been for awhile, but we now need ALL of these devices “checked-in.” Thank you for your cooperation.
Opening our network to computers from “outside” has many potential consequences. It is something that most schools do not allow due to the potential serious issues involved. We trust that you all will use good judgment and help us to maintain the integrity of our network.
Please note that after October 20th if you are using a laptop or other digital device on the network and it has not been checked in your network account may be frozen which would deny you access to all computers in the district.
